J. MacLaren Kelly, MAPP, PhD “Mac”
Licensed Clinical Psychologist
Training: Dr. Kelly earned his BA in Psychology from Kenyon College, Master of Applied Positive Psychology degree (MAPP) from University of Pennsylvania, and PhD in Clinical Psychology from Southern Illinois University. Prior to his clinical psychology graduate program, he worked as a research coordinator at several mood, anxiety, and OCD research clinics. He completed his pre-doctoral internship at University of Rochester Medical Center. Following his internship, he completed his postdoctoral training across research and clinical settings, working at URMC Wilmot Cancer Institute’s Geriatric Oncology Division, and Genesee Valley Psychology, PLLC, a local anxiety speciality clinic.
Clinical Expertise: Dr. Kelly received generalist training in treating adults who struggle with mood and anxiety disorders. His most recent clinical focus has involved providing psychotherapy for OCD, panic, and social anxiety. His clinical experience spans the care continuum, and includes work within outpatient community mental health, integrated primary care, inpatient psychiatric, and inpatient medical psychiatric settings.
Approach: Dr. Kelly’s approach is skills-focused and emphasizes a patient’s active participation in psychotherapy within and between sessions. He strives to work with key component processes that drive behavior change (e.g., cognitive reappraisal, exposure strategies, behavior activation) in a robust, practical manner. He incorporates acceptance-based, mindfulness-based, and positive psychological approaches into his clinical work.

Research: Dr. Kelly’s research interests include studying the transdiagnostic assessment and treatment of anxiety disorders, examining retrospective and prospective cognitive processes, and exploring ways of improving access to and provision of evidence-based interventions.
Ages: Dr. Kelly primarily works with adults, though works with clients 10 and up.
